The “Cult of Potato” was formally established in The Hague, Netherlands, in December 2004 by Jeffrey Allen Price, Michiel Brink, Gerard Immerzeel, and the artist duo Topp & Dubio. The project emerged from several years of international correspondence and exchange centered on potato art, collecting, performance, and cultural experimentation.
Price first connected with Dutch artist Michiel Brink through POTATOENGINE.com in the late 1990s. Following Brink’s visit to New York in 2003, Price traveled to the Netherlands in 2004, where discussions among the group led to the formation of the Cult of Potato. The Hague was chosen as the symbolic founding location due to its international character and its association with diplomacy, cultural exchange, and global cooperation. The participation of Topp & Dubio, who were based in The Hague, further reinforced the significance of the location.
What began as a playful artistic alliance quickly developed into an international collaborative project involving exhibitions, performances, publications, collecting, and cultural exchange. The following year, these activities expanded through the Cult of Potato World Tour (2005), with exhibitions and events in Rotterdam, Las Vegas, and New York.
